Kazik Staszewski is a man of contradictions, He's on heavy rotation on MTV Polska, but declined to pick up his MTV Europe award for „Best Polish Artist” this year. Firmly anti-establishment – whatever guise establishment may come in – the happily married father of two refused to let the „Insider” photograph him, insisting we use pre-approved PR shots. Staszewski has been around since 1982, when he emerged as the singer of well-known New Wave band Kult. He's still prolific, releasing around two albums per year through his record company S.P. Records.

INSIDER: You've been a lead singer (Kult) part of a collaboration (Yugoton – see lust issue) and a solo performer. Winch role did yuo like best?

KAZIK: I like all of them. Generally, I never plan or consider things too much. You never know what is going to happen tomorrow; you might die soon. I only plan six months in advance, no more than that – sometimes not even that far. If I perform with someone, it's usually on other people's initiative – that was the case with Yugoton. The only person I ever asked to sing with me was Violetta Villas (Polish diva with operatic voice and hair to match; successful in Vegas, neglected in Poland).

I: In the West, punk was a 70s phenomenon. In Poland, if was an 80s thing. Whv the difference?

K: For me „punk-rock” was also a 70s phenomenon. I listened to punk music when I was 15. In the 70s and 80s, I traveled to London every year, so I knew the London punk and New Wave scene fairly well. I saw several bands performing live – one of my inspirations at the time was the Clash. But of course there were many things I missed. Punk was an aesthetic movement, an explosion – and such a revolt can't last for 23 years straight! It must die very quickly, also in Poland. For me punk ended at the beginning of the 80s, when New Wave took over.

I: What was Polish New Wave like?

K: Nowa Fala was totally neglected by the mass media. We were hardly broadcast on radio, and neither were foreign New Wave bands, There were just two weekly programs on Radio 3 about Nowa Fala, with the clear aim of showing that New Wave is bunch of shit and that New Wave musicians arc idiots with pierced ears who don't know what they're doing. Once they played an album by Generation X – Billy Idol's former band – calling it shit, too.

I: At least yuo were in good company. Where do you think Polish music is going?

K: I don't see anything interesting going on now. I'm also not very in tune with what's going on. For the past three years, I've been very interested in folk music performed by non-English speaking musicians. For example, the Mexican scene is very interesting, with bands like Molotov, or the Spaniard Carlos Riviera. I also collect Caribbean folk music. Wherever I go, I buy hip-hop, especially from Slovakia or Brazil. I usually choose the CD the cover — if the cover is attractive, the music is usually good, too. But in Poland, rock is dead. In fact, it's dead all over the world. Technology and synthesizers have taken over. My advice is to listen to Radiostacja (FM 101.5 in Warsaw) – they'll tell yon where Polish music is going.

I: On Melassa vou sing that „Polish people are aggressive because in Poland there is no sun.” W hat's your view on Poland?

K: Poland is still a communist country; I said that on Melassa as well. I was very optimistic in the mid 1990s but now I'm rather pessimistic. Bureaucracy is growing and en everything is going in the wrong direction. I'm not so sure if joining the European Union will change anything. I like the way the U.S. functions and is organized – they managed to solve the problem of high unemployment. But things is Europe don't work the same way.

I: Why did you set up your own record company?

K: Because the previous record companies were cheating me. I thought it would be a good idea to take things into my own hands. I'm not planning to release albums of musicians other than Kaliber 44 and Pidżama Porno.

I: Would you like to perform outside of Poland?

K: Yes, but I'm a realist. I sec no market for any of my music outside of Poland.

I: What are your plans for the next six months?

K: I m releasing a new album on May 7. It'll be the music of Kurt Weill with Bertold Brecht lyrics sung in Polish, based on the “Threepenny Opera”. There'll also be a cover version of Nick Caves' “The Mercy Seat”, also in Polish. And today we're starling to record the new Kult album, which'll hopefully be released in October.
